My World
I’m a happy go lucky, passionate, loving, loyal and sensitive soul. My most amazing achievements to date have been finding and marrying my soul mate Dave and becoming a mum to my adorable son Cole.
Things that make me happy
Spending quality time with ‘my boys’ Dave and Cole.
Being with those special people in my life – friends and family.
Getting out in nature – the beach, park and woods are my favourite haunts. I am also a big fan of The National Trust and spend many happy hours dreaming of having a stately home with a rose garden.
Dancing – with Cole and Dave to the radio, in a class and on my own when no one’s watching!
Reading a good book or magazine in a steaming hot bath.
Writing, shopping, cooking and eating- I am a wanna-be domestic goddess.
Watching trashy TV when I should be doing something more productive.
Drinking wine or fizz whilst nibbling on raw chocolate energy balls – most of my books were written under the influence of these!
Things that make me growl
Sarcasm, it truly is the lowest form of wit and totally wasted on me.
Having to do ‘grown up’ things. Bills, form filing, dentist and doctors appointments fill me with dread.
Unfairness, mean-spiritness and any form of bullying I can’t tolerate.
What made me decide to write a book?
From a really young age I knew I wanted to write. I had 3 ‘jobs’ I aspired to when I grew up, to be a ballerina, a writer and I’m almost embarrassed to say, to be a Victorian! My mum soon set me straight that being a Victorian wasn't an occupation and that the characters from my favourite books and TV shows almost always met with an untimely death, usually brought about by a fit of the vapours or similar.
So that left dancing and writing. I took ballet classes from the age of 2 and as soon as I was able to wield a biro started writing, in the form of diaries and on occasion short stories that my mum would get a lady in the village to type up for me. I recently came across a diary I’d kept from my 13th year, it included an entry saying – ‘Today is daddy’s birthday, I bought him some chocolate limes, J bought him some toffee and G bought him a toothbrush!’
One ‘Golden Rule’ I always applied to my diaries was that they were to be about things I did rather than emotional ramblings. They were always intended to be read rather than hidden away and used as a vent for any frustrations.
I did end up becoming a professional dancer and years later wrote my first book. I had always thought I would write a chick-lit novel but decided to return to what I knew best – me and my diaries. The True Diary of a Bride-to-be followed me as I got married twice – to the same man might I add! Getting married was a huge milestone in my life and something I wanted to write about even if I was the only person to read it. Published just before my 40 birthday it was a massive achievement for me as it realised that childhood ambition of holding a book in my hands that I’d written.
I’m a sentimental gal and buoyed by the success of that book I continued to commemorate the milestone moments in my life by writing – The True Diary of a Mum-to-be an honest and humorous account of my pregnancy followed by The True Diary of Baby’s First Year, a book I will treasure forever because it is a constant reminder of the amazing year I spent as a new mum with my gorgeous little boy Cole. My most recent book 100 Little Words on Parenthood was a collaboration with 100 fabulous writers and bloggers who share what parenthood means to them.
